Compress files.
There are two ways to compress files. Firstly, you can use the various compression tools like Winzip or Winrar to make your files smaller. Secondly, you can utilize NFTS compression. Just right-click on folders you wish to compress. Click on Properties, move to Advanced, then click on the box with the words “Compress files in the folder”. Click OK and you’ve got free disk space right away! Clean it up.
There are two types of files that mainly make up the clutter in your hard disk. First are the temporary files. These are everything that’s saved in your Temp directories. The second type of clutter is the files found in your Downloaded Program Files folder. These are mostly Java applets and ActiveX controls that enter your HD when you browse certain websites.
Delete system restore points.
System Restore may be a vital feature to many, but it can’t be denied that System Restore also contributes to your problems with hard disk space. System Restore helps users recover the system you were using prior to making any major changes. If you’re sure that you don’t need to make use of the restore point, you can free up as much as 12% of your hard disk space just by deleting it.
To delete existing system restore points, head back to the Start Menu and click on All Programs. Choose Accessories, proceed to System Tools then select Disk Cleanup before pressing OK. Click on More Options and finally, Yes, to confirm your decision.
Look for other storage alternatives.
Your hard disk space is not the only way to store important data. You can also transfer some of your more – or less – important files and save them in your inbox or other online file storage providers. You can also burn them in CD or DVDs.
Empty your Recycle Bin.
A lot of people forget that contents in their Recycle Bin still take up space in your hard drive. Since you’ve consigned them to the trash, surely it won’t be any great loss to delete permanently them? Then again, you can always take the time to double-check its contents and select files that you’re certain you won’t need.

Those are great suggestions. I actually invested in an external hard drive recently and I empty my recycle bin every couple of months. Something else that could free up space (at least for writers/bloggers) is deleting files saved for one time use; like images. Of course there are some that can be used multiple times, but I rarely ever use the same image, so why hold on to them? I've been told that most space on people's computers is taken up by music and images. So deleting unused images and keeping music and image files on an external HD is a good way to make sure you're not over taxing your internal HD.
