As the computer gets upgraded, so do the removable storage areas. From the ancient times a floppy disk was the best thing there is, nowadays, CDs, flash disks, storage spaces in the Internet and huge external hard drives are available in the market.
You do not have to back up every single file and program you have on your computer. Just get those that are very important for you and your work. Remember to save first and foremost all the files that are highly irreplaceable or very difficult to get again. Included on your lists should be photographs, financial records, special projects, music files and programs downloaded and bought online and your address book.
By saving them on another place aside from your computer you are putting yourself at a more comfortable spot. You are ready for any emergency your computer might decide to proclaim. Always assume that your computer at any time (even when it's not showing signs of problems) will bug down.
Operating systems, such as Windows XP, have their own way of helping you with this tedious (as you think) job, by clicking on a few things in your computer you can automatically have a back up file. Search for it in your accessories under your system tools.
You need not wait till your documents are finished to back it up. Every now and then copy your files to your chosen removable storage. You never know if there just might be a power failure in the next ten minutes or your computer decides to execute the virus you caught online.
Remember that extra minutes that you take copying those files will prove to be handy and a total gem at the time you need it most. Photographs are difficult to get back especially when you are the only one with that picture so are financial statements and records that took you eons of years to manage.
The key to being smarter than your computer is to know what to do at the time your computer doesn’t. So press those keys and plug in that removable storage, save all there is. Save your life, er, files.
