This is the second installment of the Tips to Battle Social Network Addiction at Work
For those who are still oblivious to the fact that social network sites can indeed impede the productivity of workers, Web Worker Daily extracted these survey results from ClearSwift, a content security company:
- 43% of office workers access social media sites from their work computers several times a day
- 51% spend an hour or more a week on the sites; 13% spend five hours or more
- 46% have discussed work-related issues on social media sites
- 46% regularly access Wikipedia during work hours
- 50% believe they have a right to use work computers for personal internet access
So aside from aggregating your dozens of social networks, how else can a FaceBook-addict employee prevent social network sites from overtaking his/her career?
Monitor the time you use social networking sites wisely.
If you are into video snacking how about keeping true to the name of this activity and allotting just the snack/lunch time instead of making watching YouTube an every after one-hour habit?
Like any addiction treatment bits of advice, this is easier said than done. But if you use an incentivizing method, say buying yourself a chocolate bar if you're able to finish filing all those invoices and receipts before logging in to your FaceBook account, you might find it tad bit easier to get into this habit.
Or, one of my favorite methods to keep updated of the time I've wasted using social network sites, I use a timer and alarm it every 10 or so minutes. Or you can use MeasureProductivity, a software programs that helps you monitor the sites you visit and online activity detals.
You'll be amazed at how much time which you can never turn back you've wasted if only you track it. It's like how listing down all your expenses opens your eyes on the extent of financial damage splurging does to you.
However, be kind to yourself and gradually decrease the time you socialize online.
Do you have any time-tracking device/software program you specifically use to avoid wasting time online? Please share them on the comments.

People who are especially unhappy with their work often use Facebook or other social networking sites as a distraction. Or sometimes, even as a way of rewarding themselves for putting up with work they do not really enjoy. In school, some of the computers automatically ban websites like My Space and Facebook to discourage students from playing around during class hours.
