Others would find music a form of distraction. Others find it a good way to focus on their work. Others would find it as something that can help them relax or relieve stress during crunch time.
Scientific studies show that music that music actually aids in making workers more productive.
The effects of background music systems have been studied extensively in independent research as well as in studies sponsored by firms that market the systems, such as the Muzak company. Most studies show a productivity increase of about 5 percent after background systems have been installed.
Surely those who can't stand music playing while they're playing would still find ways to prove that music does not help them in getting things done or that music actually hinders their productivity.![]()
But I'm a part of the music-for-productivity side so I'll say that it depends on what pace you'd like to achieve while working or what industry you're in.
Many would often only think of Bach, Vivaldi and Mozart's music (Mozart effect) when asked about what type of music can boost productivity. But as I've said it's a case by case basis. And people differ in taste.
I find Anne Zelenka's article about personalizing your music for productivity as a good explanation of this point.
When I'm feeling like I need some drastic motivational music such as when I'm trying to beat a deadline, I'd go hear something from Prodigy. When I'm feeling stressed, I'd go for some Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds' music.
And although I'm not sure if I've listened to any of it yet, there's also Muzak, the company that distributes background music for businesses.
What about you? What music lets your creative/productive juices flowing? What's in your iPod?

My favorite background music for productivity is music with few (or no) words and an upbeat tempo.
I would not necessarily identify as a "techno" fan, but I have some albums by Thievery Corporation, Massive Attack, and others that I find very enjoyable to have on in the background while I'm working.
If there are words, though, I get tempted to sing along, and that's very distracting (not to mention painful for anyone within earshot...)
