Yesterday, at bizsolutions plus, Lewis Green talked about social responsibilities and business. Things businesses can and should do to show they not only respect and appreciate their clients and customers, but that they respect and appreciate themselves and their world; Lewis calls these responsibilities a Uniform Code of Business Conduct. The Code that we must live by is nothing more than common sense and common courtesy; things we know we should do but, too often, don't.
Uniform Code of Business ConductSure, the ideas behind the code are repetitions; life-smoothers are like that.
1. Do no harm, ever.
2. Provide products and services designed to make lives better.
3. Charge a fair price based on value that fulfills wants and needs.
4. Create an environment that protects the environment.
5. Never tell a lie or half-a-truth.
6. Always put people above profit.
7. Encourage freedom of expression.
8. Recognize no one as more important than another.
9. Practice fairness built on respect and dignity.
10. Create happiness.

Carolyn,
Thank you for the trackback but more important thank you for getting the point. Yes, the Code is obvious. But as you said, and as I said to another commentor, sometimes we know how we should behave but it is buried deep inside us. And when we get busy or frustrated by our emotions, sometimes a published Code can ground us.
That is why I believe that such things as Mission Statements, Vision Statements, Guiding Principles, and Values statements are important documents in a business. They should be the center of building a culture and the grounding for all training.
Have a great 4th.
