This past Monday, May 14, twelve sites were banned from view by service personnel using official department computers worldwide. Affected, all social media sites, are: YouTube, Metacafe, IFilm, StupidVideos, FileCabi, MySpace, BlackPlanet, Hi5, Pandora, MTV, 1.fm, live 365, and Photobucket.
The government’s official reason for the action is network efficiency and security and to relieve the strain on bandwidth. The Pentagon also cites technological limits; mission-critical areas must have the bandwidth available at all times. This at a time when the Defense Department has accelerated its YouTube campaign to reach a younger audience and to show the war efforts favorably.
