Sam Raimi's Burning Desire

A burning desire to be and to do is the starting point from which the dreamer must take off.  Dreams are not born of indifference, laziness, or lack of ambition. –Napoleon Hill

Director Sam Raimi knew exactly what he wanted from Sony Pictures when he walked onto their lot seven years ago.  Not content to limit himself to directing the tale of Spider-Man, Raimi wanted “to do the Peter Parker story”.  He walked off that lot having been awarded the most important film franchise in Sony’s history.

But when he told us he wanted to do the Peter Parker story, not the Spider-Man story, we knew.  This (film) was our baby; it was going to be an expensive gamble for us. We needed to hand it to someone who understood Spider-Man, but who really got Peter Parker. When Sam walked out, we knew we could hand the baby to him. --Avi Arad, Producer, Spider-Man 3

Spider-Man 3 is being released in the United States and Canada today, May 4, to a North American record total of 4,253 theaters.

Sam Raimi’s burning desire to direct comic-book films has propelled him and Sony to the top of the film industry.  Worldwide, the franchise has taken in $1.6 billion.

With an official budget of $258 million, Spider-Man 3 is not only bigger than earlier Spider-man films, it’s the most expensive film made in the US dollars.  Preliminary statistics estimate an opening weekend box-office take of more than $100 million.

Sam Raimi is living his dream to direct comic-book films.
