Limiting Distractions
Tools that help you lessen the impact of distractions are always welcome. And if they can do it in a way that isn’t painful and doesn’t take a big dose of willpower, so much the better.

I looked at two computer screen-altering programs reviewed on Lifehacker. Both of them hide the stuff you don’t need to look at. The first one, JediConcentrate, hides all the windows except your active one and allows you to make them black or just shade them a percentage of grey so they’re less attention-seeking.

The second one I like better: Darkroom. This program is for writing. matrix.jpgYou know, the kind of writing that you have to sit there and think about a little. The kind that’s awfully hard to do when you’re being needled to check your email every ten seconds. (Photo courtesy of NASA)

Darkroom makes your entire screen black. To get some color on it, or any action at all, you have to start typing those words. Yeah, it’s just you and the screen. If that’s not enough to get you working, you could also take a tip from writer John McPhee and tie yourself to your chair with your bathrobe sash.
