A picture of something obviously makes it easier to understand. A 3-D replica is even better. Interestingly, the Japanese practice of creating plastic restaurant food started because Japanese diners were unfamiliar with newly available Western foods.
A replica maker explains his trade. "When we as customers go to restaurants it is easy for us to see what we will get with the models," he explains, his pants and shirt covered in small paint drips. "Otherwise, we would just be guessing from the menu."
People who were born blind and gain the ability to see cannot actually “see” the way we think of the concept. They see light and shapes, but they must learn to associate those images with mental concepts before they can really see.
I once took photos of a client’s cluttered room and showed them to her on the spot. She didn’t recognize the room! She really couldn’t see it. What are you not seeing in your current environment? Hint: take pictures of it and look at them when you’re somewhere else.
