This is a good example of a “duh” topic. We all know not to open suspicious attachments, follow iffy links or let our antivirus subscriptions lapse. But, occasionally, a usually sharp person will be fooled, or relax her guard, and Bad Things Happen.
Often, I get a mass email from a well-meaning colleague warning me about some new PayPal scam email. I roll my eyes and say to the screen, “didn’t we just go through this last month?” My policy is to junk those emails immediately, without even reading them, much less following the links.
If I’m in any doubt about my account, I go to the website by typing the address in myself and I check it out. This may seem like major “duh” to you, but I’m always surprised at who falls for these things.
It’s way more efficient to have an all-purpose policy (never read, never open link, check account yourself) than to be worried about whether you’re up to date on the latest scams and devise a new response each time. You'll also save time not writing those mass emails :).
