Here’s a fast way to shorten your piles. Instead of attacking them from the top, where all the hot, demanding items are, take a sheaf off the bottom. On the bottom you’ll find the cooler, less urgent items. Sometimes you’ll find things so old that they’ve expired and you can just toss them out!
If you can’t toss them, they’re probably sufficiently aged that you have less attachment to them and are less worried about them. That means making a decision and taking action will be lots easier.

My office became a magnet for mountainous piles as I finished a six-month book project.
I was able to eliminate the avalanches by dedicating just 10 minutes a day to the cleanup. In one week, the office looked 100 percent better.
The tasks that seem hard to tackle become more manageable when you break the project into smaller pieces. That way it doesn't look totally overwhelming.
