Focusing on what’s in front of you is an effective way to declutter or just tidy up your office. Messies Anonymous founder Sandra Felton recommends the Mount Vernon method.
This technique involves starting at one spot in your office and decluttering your way around the room. Finish each area before you go on to the next. You won’t get it all done at once, and neither does the cleaning staff at Mount Vernon. When they come back to work the next day, they just pick up where they left off.
“It is easy to clean Mount Vernon; George is not there is to mess it up,” notes Felton. Your office is probably much smaller than George’s place, but it makes up for that in terms of capacity for getting cluttered up. This technique gives you a routine for tidying that you can do a bit of each day and keep things under control.
Warm greetings! This method works well if you are motivated, but I actually prefer adding in the element of taking in the energy of the room and "reading" what is going on internally by really engaging the things that surround you.
I wrote a post about this a while ago that may be of interest: http://www.its-not-about-your-stuff.com/2006/04/a_quick_but_imp.html
