Sometimes when people are overwhelmed with work, it turns out they’ve increased their own workload by taking on too much. If you never say no, you’ll have plenty not to say no to. You must set your own boundaries for what’s too much and too soon.
No one else cares about your boundaries as much as you do. And no one else suffers as much when they’re trespassed. If you’re reluctant to do this because you want to be “nice,” or you don’t want to seem selfish or self indulgent, remember that your productivity will suffer if you don’t take care of yourself.
At a meeting, someone said that she suddenly noticed one day, when she was hunched over her computer eating a sandwich, that the company bigwigs went out to lunch. That’s right. They left their desks, even left the building, in the middle of the day! And they stayed away a whole hour!
That hour isn’t an upper level perk, it’s a success strategy everyone should use. Taking real breaks clears your mind, changes the scenery and gives you perspective. The fresh air doesn't hurt either.
