Just like your file cabinets, your closets and the top of your desk, your bag needs regularly purging. If you don't carry a handbag, you've probably got a backpack, briefcase or tote bag (or some combination thereof). Particularly if you find your shoulder aching from hauling a bag around, it's time to dump it out and see what's in there.
Take everything out and make sure it's something you use enough to be worth carrying around everyday. Wallet, datebook, cell phone, glasses: check. What you might not need: extra sunglasses, binder clips, nail clippers, old newspapers, etc. See how little you can get by with and save your back. You can always put things back in later.
Go through your wallet too, while you're at it. There are bound to be old receipts, outdated stamps, mysterious business cards and the like in there that you can chuck and make your load lighter.

In my workshops I have people look in their purses, briefcases, etc. to see what "stuff" has accumulated there, and why. It's amazing what we find! The point: These places are not good collecting points (ditto for the brain).
