Create Your Own Suppport System

Sometimes, otherwise productive people find themselves indulging in unproductive behavior prompted by a new, negative situation. In her book How to Put More Time in Your Life, Dru Scott writes about a woman who got a new manager at work with a very different style than her previous one.

The old manager had been generous with praise and feedback. The new one was very hands-off and let his staff work on their own. This woman found herself missing deadlines, which she never had before. The new manager nagged her about it. That caused more stress but didn't help her resolve the issue until Scott pointed out that her behavior was getting her the attention she needed, even though it was negative.

The solution was for the woman to create her own positive support by seeking out colleagues at work with whom she could share her successes and get feedback on problems at work. That kind of input from others was critical to her work productivity. She couldn't get it from the new manager, so she took the initiative to get it on her own.
