Even when it's desirable, change can be hard to undertake. We are creatures of habit. Anytime you make a change, no matter how positive, it can throw off the rest of your daily routine. Give yourself plenty of time to make changes.
Someone asked me recently how he could organize his paper better. I gave him a bunch of suggestions and I could see his eyes start to glaze over. "Yeah, those are great ideas," he said. "I'll have to work on those someday..." I assured him he didn't have to, in fact shouldn't, make all the changes at once.
"Pick just one," I suggested. It takes 21 consecutive days to form a new habit. Consecutive, not just Monday-Friday. If you're going to do something every day that you're not used to, make it small. He chose sorting mail everyday instead of leaving it all for Saturday morning. It should take him 2 minutes a day (and seriously improve the quality of his Saturdays).
What's one small thing you can start doing today to improve your productivity?
