Elisa Camahort, one of the cofounders of Blogher, has made a career of blogging and blog watching for businesses and non-profits. With her background in marketing, she immediately saw the potential of blogging for communicating with customers. She writes six client blogs, in addition to personal blogs and blogging at the Blogher website. In this two part interview, I asked Elisa, what impact do you think blogging will have on business?
You mean what impact it's already having, don't you :)
Blogging is an emerging business communications tool, so its purpose in business may just be an evolution of the existing imperative to communicate with your customers. Its unique contribution to the world of business communications, however, is that it is a far more interactive and real-time channel.
You can talk to your customers, and hear back what they think of what you're saying. Better yet, you can find out what your customers think...without waiting for them to be so pissed they're calling your support 800-number!
Companies are being told to engage with the blogosphere, to get into blogging...and they think that means the first thing they should do is start a blog. Well, sure, a lot of companies could have awesome, interesting blogs...if they decide what they want to say, and who they're hoping to say it to.
But the other side of the equation is the listening part. Sometimes companies forget about that. Are you paying attention to the blogogsphere? Are you tracking if they mention you, your products, your competitors? Are you ready to respond, in all sincerity, if someone takes the time to blog about your company and your products or services? Are you ready to listen even if they're saying mean things?
