I’ve found myself falling into this trap recently. I’ve been taking taiko classes for about ten months now. It’s been the usual zigzag of leaps forward, plateaus and even some falling backwards, but forward progress is being made. I have rhythm so I’m good at keeping the beat and I like learning new ones. I like the challenge of memorizing new song sections and learning the kata that goes with them.

What I don’t like so much is repetitive drills. That’s not so uncommon, I know. I have to keep reminding myself of the value of repetition, of getting the movement ingrained into my body so that I hardly have to think about it. But it’s kind of boring.  What to do?
 It’s gotten worse lately because there are other students who aren’t getting it as fast as I do. I’m impatient to move faster. I want to know what’s next. I don't want to keep doing same ol', same ol'.

So this is my challenge. Accepting that learning a new skill like a musical form is something that requires the discipline of repetition (i.e., old stuff).
