It’s much harder to make something simple than to make it complicated. Anyone can layer on more stuff. Just look at the IRS tax code (or certain computer software). Most of us expect to be able to use things without having to take a class, or we at least strive for that. But for some reason we’re good at complicating our own lives unnecessarily. Why does this happen? Here are three possibilities:
- Something changed (you moved, something broke, etc.) and the underlying habit just got tweaked instead of reviewed from the ground up and revised accordingly
- You bought something new and didn’t get rid of the old one, which is now in the way
- You procrastinated on making a small change, and the effect of that has increased exponentially
Moral of the story: Ask yourself regularly:
- What am I doing?
- Why am I doing it?
- Why am I doing it this way?
