![]() At the suggestion in John Richardson’s blog post, I just put myself on the beta tester list for Foldera, a new way to orchestrate your symphony of input, as they say in their blog. This free, web based service will organize and integrate your email, contacts, documents, tasks, calendar, comments and IMs (there’s probably more too). The user sets up activity folders for each project or topic and Foldera automatically files all incoming information from all sources into the folders for you. Just a little mind boggling.
The company makes the very good point that in spite of the large selection of information management tools we have now, it’s a lot of work to make them work together and to manage them and even to remember where to look for all the info you’ve got. Foldera will take care of all that for you. And it does the filing! No one likes filing.
It will obviously be a terrific tool for collaboration, particularly when the collaborators are far apart and in motion. I look forward to seeing how it works for a sole operator like me.

For ages I have been trying to find a way to readily use what marketers call 'swipe files'. (I take it to mean a shoebox of tidbits of information from whence it is easy to find inspiration and content.)
Do you think Foldera might make a good 'Swipe File' for me for researching and writing books &tc?
Good luck with your betaring

Margaret,
I think Foldera is overkill for what you're talking about. Foldera is for managing everything, but you're talking about more of a scrapbook, I think.
Backpack, made by the clever 37Signals people, may work for that purpose. With Backpack, you can stash to-do lists (with checkboxes!), notes, links, reminders, files and images on pages you create on their server, viewable only by you unless you want to share. It's free for 5 pages worth. Try it and let me know how it works!
Michael,
Thanks so much! The productivity topic is so interesting to me because it seems to be on people's minds more and more, as information comes faster and faster. It's a big challenge to manage information in a simple way and not make the managing itself an onerous task.

Claire,
You've got it ... making the different information management tools work together is a pain. We'll be releasing beta accounts shortly, and I look forward to hearing how you find it as a sole operator. Welcome aboard.
