Climbers who arrive at Everest don't just start climbing. They have to acclimate first. Starting from Base Camp, they go up to the first camp, then they come back down. A few days later they climb up to the second camp, then they come back down. Later still, they trek up to the third camp, then, right back down to Base Camp.
For any mountain you are climbing, such as the one on your desk, you may experience this same one step forward, one (or two) steps back phenomenon. But you can see the top of Mt. Everest from Base Camp. Your summit may be the surface of your desk, or an empty in box. Even if you can't actually see it, you know it's there. So don't let yourself be frozen on the spot contemplating the peak. Keep moving and keep your eye on the goal.
