
Here are some guesses:
- we live in a culture where there's a massive amount of input at all times that can be hard to resist,
- we assume that someone who answers a question quickly is smarter than someone who has to pause for thought,
- most people are extroverts, meaning that they are energized more by contact with others than by being alone with their thoughts,
- our puritan (American) heritage that dictates you do work that is clearly productive: no woolgathering or lollygagging (idle hands are the devil's playground). Time set aside for thinking looks suspiciously like a license to daydream.
