Stir the Productivity Pot

Productivity
"The relationship between production of an output and one, some, or all of the resource inputs used in accomplishing the assigned task. It is measured as a ratio of output per unit of input over time. It is a measure of efficiency and is usually considered as output per person-hour."

What are your “resource inputs?” Some examples are your time, your skills, your tools and your knowledge. Also, your ideals, what motivates you, your goals, your desire for success, money or approval, your desire to avoid negative consequences, your competitiveness, your preferred work pace and style. What do you stir into the pot to get good productivity out of yourself?

Especially these days when so many jobs require more personal initiative and responsibility than before, you need to be aware of the less obvious, more psychological aspects to your own productivity, and how leverage them for best performance.

These aspects are also a good place to look when you find yourself under performing. Ask yourself: how does this relate to my _________ goal? What if I got great feedback from ________ about this? Would I be more into this assignment if I could work on it at home? Remember: garbage in, garbage out.

Claire, I have enjoyed reading the insights at your sight. Thanks! I am wondering where you factor in the relationship between who one knows or how much money one has and how productivity can come from innovative ideas that get adopted? Any ideas?

Ellen,
Thanks for your comment! As to how productivity can come from innovative ideas, I think you're talking about thinking out of the box. In my post,I suggest that people look at themselves from a different angle to make sure what they want is really what they want, which is a way of thinking out of the box.

And in reference to your “Get Smart” article (I don't think I can make a link in a comment!), I definitely agree that it's better to ask "How can I make this happen?" than "Can I achieve this?" Questions like the first one open up possibilities, but the second one shuts them down.

Years ago I took an improvisational comedy class and discovered that you should always say “yes!” If you say no to another performer's question, you shut down the scene. Saying yes means it can go anywhere.

Your question about who you know and how much money you have seems to do with entrepreneurship rather than individual productivity. Perhaps one of our entrepreneurial bloggers such as Steve Browne of Lone Wolf Tracks or Cathi Kent of Biz Cradle would have some ideas?
