Guest Blogger: Ellen Campbell on the 20 Minute Practice
I want to welcome my guest blogger today, Ellen Campbell. Ellen struggles with the same short 24 hour days that the rest of us do. Sometimes that can make you cranky.

What Can 20 Minutes a Day Do for You??

In my effort to be more productive, I often read articles and books that claim you can accomplish many things if you only do them 20 minutes (20 minutes seems to be the magic number) a day.  The last book I read claimed you can reduce stress by walking 20 minutes a day.
But I've also been encouraged to clean house, study language, do yoga, meditate, etc. for a mere 20 minutes a day.  However, all of those 20 minutes a day can add up to a lot of time!  You still have to work, eat, and sleep.
Plus, as a buddy pointed out, it takes time to transition between each 20 minute task. For instance, you have to put away the yoga mat before you can do the 20 minute house cleaning. You have to put on your jacket and shoes to do the 20 minute walk. And you have to stay awake for the 20 minute meditation.

In the end, there isn't time to do anything! My solution has been to pick one 20-minute task per day. At this rate, my yoga is terrible, my language skills are lacking, I haven't meditated much, and there are still dishes in the sink.

Yours Truly, Ellen Campbell

great thought about the value of a 20-minute nab! Thanks Elen! Seems to me that the best approach is quite closely connected to what most interests us.

So the 20 minute task or tactic I try might differ radically from the one others try.

When so much distraction is shouting for our attention these days, how do we know what 20-minute-milestone to run with if we have longlasting benefits in mind? Thoughts?

Ellen (Weber),
About getting long-lasting benefits, I think 1) you have to trust your own judgment, 2) forward motion is usually good and 3) review your activities regularly to see if you're getting closer to your goals. Being able to mentally switch between in-the-moment view and 5-years-hence view is a good technique to develop.
